Panthers Fall in Title Game at St. Mary’s

The Panthers men’s basketball team (1-2) fell 74-62 to host St. Mary’s College of Maryland (2-0) this past Sunday in the title game of the Dan Greene and Wayne Cook Memorial Invitational, held at Michael P. O’Brien ARC Arena in St. Mary’s City, Maryland.

The Seahawks jumped out to an 11-3 lead four minutes into the game. The Panthers answered with a 10-1 run to grab a 13-12 lead on a pair of Tahli Oden, freshman, free throws at 13:32. Several lead changes occurred throughout the rest of the first half, with St. Mary’s taking a 35-27 lead at the break.

St. Mary’s Jordan Goodwin’s three-pointer and Gary Grant’s layup in the first 90 seconds of the second half extended the lead to 40-27. The Panthers trimmed the lead to 44-41 on Calvin Washington’s, freshman, layup at 14:43. The host Seahawks went on a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 51-41, and the Panthers never got closer than that.

The high scorers for the Panthers were Alfredo Abel-Rivera, freshman, with 28 points and Washington with 10 points.

Next up, Coach Patrick Corrigan’s team will be back in action Sun., Nov. 20, at home against Methodist University. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at Swartz Gym.
