Scout Lynch has hosted Call of Cthulhu since spring 2024, and with the semester’s end rapidly approaching, their time at Ferrum ends, and so does their hosting of Call of Cthulhu.
“It’s very bittersweet,” said Lynch, a senior. “I’m very excited for my successor to go on and do the rest of the campaigns they can.”
For three semesters in a row, Lynch, a senior, has narrated Call of Cthulhu every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m., playing in the library’s LEaP Studio with the library and Gamers Guild hosting the event. It happens at the same time, same place, same people every week. The only thing that changes is the story the campaign follows, and the characters who play through the narrative.
“It’s really fun when the players do the right thing,” said Kiren Groce, Gamers Guild president. “When we’re all off track, it gets rough.”
The game is inspired by the writing of H.P. Lovecraft, who wrote about elder gods, madness, and a human’s own insignificance in the world. It plays like Dungeons & Dragons, another game the Gamers Guild sponsors. It follows similar mechanics, with players creating their character then performing actions and rolling dice to see whether they succeed or fail.
“I think it’s a great game,” said Lynch. “It’s perfectly chaotic, it’s rowdy, it can be violent. It’s just a really good time for everyone.”
The fall 2025 campaign is inspired by Scooby-Doo characters, with each player creating their own character based on one from any Scooby-Doo property or crossover.
The gang investigates a recent disappearance on the set of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Orlando Bloom is missing, and the gang has to investigate in an abandoned theater.
“I think it’s always heading in an interesting direction,” said sophomore Phillip Turner.
Lynch has been hosting Call of Cthulhu since fall 2024, starting with a preliminary campaign as a test to see if people enjoyed the game. This semester, Lynch hosts their third campaign, which has been the most popular yet, with more recurring players than in previous years.
“It’s the most players we’ve ever had in a campaign,” said Lynch. “It’s a little chaotic, but it’s going very well.”
The Gamers Guild will continue to host Call of Cthulhu, with another student taking over in Lynch’s place. Mon., Oct. 6, after fall break, the new student will conduct a preliminary one shot campaign that will last one or two sessions.
The campaign will continue until the end of the fall 2025 semester, with Lynch hosting the campaign until their departure from Ferrum.
