This past weekend, the Lady Panthers traveled to Methodist University to play in a double-header.

Game one resulted in an 8-5 loss, and game two ended on a Methodist walk-off single to win 9-8.

In both games, Ferrum went down big in the first inning–4-0 in game one, and 5-0 in game two.

But the bats were hot last weekend, allowing for comebacks in both of those games.

After going down 6-0 in the first two innings, the women were able to rally and score one run in the fifth and another four in the sixth to bring it within one.

In game two after a five-run burst from Methodist, Ferrum plated four runs in the second and third innings.

“The team definitely did not give up and stayed engaged and fought in both games,” Head Coach Joshua Freeman said. “It was great to see their fight and their grit in both ball games.”

Although the team came back in both games, Methodist was able to find ways to win late.

“I thought we had great at bats, defense played well, and we competed,” Freeman said. “They put the ball in play and scored in bunches.  We have to limit the runs and make the extra play to stay out of the big inning.”

One part of the weekend that shined was the offense.  After a rough weekend at #8 Christopher Newport, the ladies showed they can hit.

“We can swing it, and we can put up crooked numbers when we are swinging at good pitches and making the pitcher work,” Freeman said.

Senior Breanna Weaver went 2-3 with three RBI’s and a walk to help the offense in game one.

But game two saw junior center fielder, Leanna Bartrug go 4-4 with three RBI’s in the nine spot.

The women put up a total of 13 runs on 18 hits in the two contests and are creeping up on their first win of the season.

“We are going to keep working hard and being good teammates.  More opportunities ahead,” Freeman said to the team after their game-two loss ended in a walk-off single by Methodist.

More opportunities will arise for softball as they play eight games over spring break.

Softball will finish their early season road trip this Saturday as they travel to Mary Baldwin to play a double-header.

The next day will be the team’s home opener against Misericordia University.  Games will be at noon and 2 p.m.

Following that will be a home midweek double-header against Greensboro College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.–all before the team prepares to compete against Denison University and Meredith College at the Charlie Dobbins Tournament in Raleigh, N.C.

“Score more runs than the other team. Just have to put a complete game together,” Freeman said on what his team needs to do to get over the hump and notch their first win of the season.
