Remarks from President Mirta Martin, Director of Athletics Cleive Adams, and Program Coordinator of Health and Human Performance Karen Carpenter detailed the upcoming goals and the commitment to academic and athletic success.
Martin opened the meeting with a speech, setting the tone for the semester.
“This semester marks the beginning of a milestone for Ferrum College,” she declared, highlighting the importance of Feb. 12, which is the day the NCAA will announce its decision about the college’s transition to Division II.
“Five years from now, 10 years from now, you’re going to remember where you are sitting on Feb. 12,” Martin said.
She praised the athletic department’s academic achievements, noting a collective GPA of 3.3 last semester.
“My goal for each of you is to graduate on a path of excellence on the field and in the classroom,” she stated.
Carpenter followed with remarks aimed at academic accountability.
She encouraged athletes to maintain focus on attendance, performance, and responsibilities as student athletes.
“I’m excited for our winter teams to be finishing up strong, and I’m excited for our spring teams,” she said.
Athletic Director Cleive Adams addressed the athletes and reflected on the athletic progress and the challenges ahead.
After introducing the Athletic Department staff and coaches, Adams spoke on the importance of embracing the journey toward success.
“Success comes in a lot of ways,” he stated, mentioning Ferrum’s achievements over the years. “The uncomfortable part of winning is understanding where you are.”
He shared insights on the athletic teams’ performances, noting a 42% winning percentage during the fall season and an improved 68%overall success rate in the winter, with a 52% winning percentage in competitions.
The transition to D-II represents a step forward for the department and school with its commitment to excellence in education and competition.
