The Women’s Lacrosse Team is gearing up to start its 2025 season. This year, Ferrum has a new head coach, Carly Coyle, and an assistant coach, Molly Burdick, who succeeds Karen Harvey and Sarah Perry, respectively.

Women’s Lax is looking to improve from Harvey’s 2024 season record of 10-7.

“I think right now we are learning to match together, and I think once we hit that main goal, the next is to win each of the five-minute periods, and if we continue to put that together, then we will get the bigger picture and come out with some W’s,” Coyle said.

This is Burdick’s first year as an assistant coach at Ferrum.

“I think our strength is defense,” Burdick noted. “Our energy is what sets us apart, our willingness to want to win and having a new head coach and what she’s brought to the team has set us apart from other programs.”

This year’s team captains are Ashtyn Bishop, a graduate student, Makaila Veney, a senior, and Caroline Moore, a sophomore.

Ashtyn Bishop is coming off a season in which she scored 17 goals, all of which were career firsts. Bishop was questioned about her own goals as a captain of this squad.

“My personal goal this season is to drive myself and my teammates to our highest potential,” she stated.

Makaila Veney, like Bishop, is coming off a 2024 season in which she earned 45 draw controls, bringing her total to 64 for her career. She also caused 39 turnovers, which lifts her to 46 for her career.

“My personal goal as captain this season is to lead by example, foster strong team chemistry, and ensure all feel motivated and included,” Veney said. “I will also aim to create a positive and competitive environment that pushes us to reach our full potential.”

Coyle also mentioned some standout players to watch.

“I can surely tell you three,” she responded. “Our freshman goaltender, Cayden West, has been putting in work in the net, and I’m excited to see what she has going this season. Makaila Veney, a senior, who has previously ranked in the ODAC, is a very strong defender who can generate turnovers and earn draw controls for us. Ashtyn Bishop, a returner graduate student, runs midfield for us and can be a major component of our attack and generating offense.”

Coach Coyle’s team will make its season debut at home on Tues., Feb. 25. The game will commence at 4 p.m.
