The Ferrum Forward Committee sprung into the March meeting on Tues., March 11, as Chair Burton White welcomed a room full of members to the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum.
The group began with an introduction, and the approval of the January minutes. The February meeting was canceled due to inclimate weather.
Government relations chair and Friends of Ferrum Park representative Ed Saunders followed with the introduction of an upcoming event.
“May 31st we are doing SwVAL,” he said. “It is the Southwestern Virginia Alternative Living Expo.”
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and vendors will give 30-45 minute presentations of alternative living aspects. Aquaponics, heirloom seat-saving, mushroom farming, salt sourcing, beekeeping, and ammunition reloading are just a few of the many presenters.
The event will take place at Ferrum Park.
There is an additional list of FOFP events listed on the website, including bingo, escape rooms, a poultry swap, and more.
Moreover, on April 10, an inflatable, walk-through colon will be on-site at the Tri-Area Community Health Center from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to bring awareness to rectal cancer and encourage preventative screening and health. Additionally, The Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department will have a pancake breakfast on March 29.

College and community relations chair Tina Hanlon also spoke of events in the area.
The group also promoted the series of Inquiring Minds events on Wednesdays in the Stanley Library on campus, and the 15th Annual Empty Bowls program on March 16th in Franklin Hall from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., which funds the Panther Packs program.
On the weekend of March 27 is Ferrum College’s spring theatre production, Mary Poppins, in which ushers are needed. Hydroponic lettuce, herbs, and spinach is still being sold on Mondays from 3 p.m.–5 p.m. at the Titmus Agriculture Center.
Business and beautification chair Katrina Harrison asked for volunteers to revamp the Ferrum welcoming signs and proposed the organization a litter pickup.
Membership and fundraising chair Rebecca Saunders conversed with the group about continuing the ice cream social into the following year and encouraged attendees to suggest further fundraising ideas.
There was no old business to discuss, and the meeting time was the only subject of new business. There was nothing sent to the steering committee.
The committee adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
