The Rex Theatre buzzed with energy and excitement as the Theatre Department held a public showcase of its newly unveiled Bachelor of Fine Arts: Professional Stage Performance Degree on March 12.
This practicum-based program aims to prepare the next generation of theatre artists for success by immersing students into the professional world of theatre. Current students and staff believe this opportunity best represents their vision for those students.
“We are looking for the students that see the world beyond themselves, who have a commitment to community, theatre, and art, and with the drive and grit to do the things we are called to do,” expressed Theatre Arts Professor Emily Blankenship-Tucker.
The new BFA will call for students to create, market, and tour their own one-hour show before graduating, so that graduates could then market and perform this work throughout their professional careers. The program will also be transfer-student friendly, accepting students with no fewer than four semesters left.
“I felt that this was an opportunity to create a degree that the young Rebecca Crocker would have loved to have,” stated Theatre Arts Professor Rebecca Crocker.
Several students and theatre staff went on to share their own thoughts about the atmosphere of the Theatre Department.
“This building itself is built on collaboration. The art we make is a fruit of labor of so many people. I’m excited to see the future students and their potential being nourished and pushed forward” mentions TJ Baker, alumni.
In addition to the new the BFA, there are also several certificates available for students to achieve, including Appalachian storytelling and more. These certificates provide an opportunity for the students to advance their respect and knowledge of the Appalachian culture while pursuing their degree.
“Since coming to the college two years ago, it has become more and more like home,” said Django Burgess, sophomore. “My passion for music, theatre, and performance are uplifted and thriving. Beyond instruction, I have made some extremely important relationships here. Friendships and artistic collaborators have influenced and improved my abilities more than I can adamantly express. The arts are everything that has helped me grow into myself.”
The new BFA in Professional Stage Performance gives students a chance to dive deep into the world of professional theatre and prepare for successful careers. With a focus on collaboration and real-world experience, the program helps students build their skills and make valuable connections that will last a lifetime.
