Over the last week, Panther baseball collected two wins, dropping two games in a double header and rallying back to start a two-game win streak, before eventually getting the streak broken by Lynchburg.

The team started off the week against Virginia Wesleyan University, a double header atop Ferrum Mountain. The Marlins came out strong, dishing out three runs at the top of the first inning.

The Panthers answered right back, scoring four runs of their own thanks to a senior Kyle Markowitz home run, followed by various RBI’s to bring the score up to 4-3.

Markowitz began the 2nd inning slamming another home run, pushing the score to 5-3 in favor of the Panthers.

During the 4th inning, the Marlins rallied to score three runs, which was immediately answered back with a Markowitz RBI, and two RBI’s from senior Seth Shannon, leaving the score at 8-6 going into the 5th.

The game would remain scoreless until the 7th inning, where the Marlins would secure a comeback with three runs to take the first game 9-8.

The second game of the double-header featured a tie ball game after six innings, but the Marlins would explode for seven straight in the 7th inning to sweep the day against the Panthers.

Ferrum then met Mary Baldwin, who took an early 2-1 lead in the first inning. The Panthers then gave up two more runs in the second and sixth inning, which would be the last run the Squirrels would score in the game.

Going into the 7th, the score was 8-4 in favor of the Panthers. Junior Gregory Melo then drove a double into right center and brought three runners home, further extending their lead.

Ferrum would go on to put the final nails in the coffin with two runs at the bottom of the 8th, securing a 13-4 win at home.

Their final game of the week was against Averett University, where the Panthers exploded for seven runs through the first four innings, taking a decisive 7-1 lead.

The Cougars began to mount a comeback, dishing out four runs between the 5th and 6th inning, then another two on the 6th and a final run in the 7th to take a 8-7 lead, achieving their first lead in the ball game.

Just then, junior Gabriel Lebron made contact with the ball, penetrating through left-center field to bring home two runners, securing a 9-7 victory for the Panthers against ODAC competition.

Ferrum went back on the road against Lynchburg this past Saturday, dropping both games to the #2 ranked team in the nation. The Hornets took both games, with scores of 5-3 and 7-3, which featured another home run from Markowitz and 2 RBI’s from senior Shawn Baxter.
