The fall 2025 issue of Chrysalis Literary Arts Magazine is coming around, with a submission deadline of Sept. 8.
The editors of the magazine are looking for students, staff, and professors to submit their pieces of photography, poetry, art, and prose (short story, essays, or segments of writing). Students who submit have the opportunity to win prizes for their work, with first place in each category getting $100, and second place receiving $50. Staff and professors are not eligible for prizes.
People are only allowed to submit 10, double-spaced pages total of prose and poetry, with the maximum of one being four pages long. Students can also submit only a maximum of 10 pieces of visual art, with only five being photographs.
There will be an official reveal for the magazine later in the semester, where all of the submissions will be revealed for students and staff to read and show off their work in a public forum. The reveal and the winners of each category will be announced at that time.
Staff members are encouraged to submit their work to Chrysalis, especially those who have not submitted.
“(I did not submit) In years past, I have not been a staff member,” said JB Von Preysing, coordinator of library and tutorial services. “I have been also been working on bigger projects until recently. I might enter something that is not writing; I might enter pictures. I just haven’t decided yet.”
Some students are also interested in publishing their work for the first time.
“I just wanted to put my writing somewhere instead of a notebook,” said sophomore Phillip Turner.
Coffee houses, hosted by Chrysalis will also be announced as they are decided, which will allow students to read and show off their work in public. They are. not only able to read prose or poetry, students are also able to give performances to the audience. One example of this is from Gabriel Alvarez, senior, who did an impromptu guitar solo last spring.
“It’s a really good idea to submit because you have a physical copy of your work,” said Scout Lynch, Chrysalis editor in chef. “It looks great on a resume and its a perfect time capsule for your time at Ferrum.”
Submissions are due Sept. 8, and should be submitted to english Professor Katherine Grimes’ email, [email protected].
