Sarah Gallagher, senior, has often been spotted throughout campus sporting several hats.
On game days, she can be found on the football field as a drum major, leading the marching band through the halftime show and sideline performances.
Other times, she can be heard singing along with the choir or even lending a hand in various campus theatre productions.
Originally from Albrightsville, PA, and a graduate of Jim Thorpe Area High School, Gallagher has spent her college years fully immersed in Ferrum’s music and theatre communities, balancing college life and coursework on top of a hectic schedule of rehearsals and performances.
“It was truly rewarding seeing months of hard work come together to put on the musical,” explained Gallagher about working on her most recent project, Mary Poppins. “I enjoyed working with all of the talented actors and musicians that worked so diligently to put that show on its feet and have made memories that will last long after I graduate.”
In addition to Mary Poppins, Gallagher has been involved in multiple recitals and performances throughout her time here, showcasing both her vocal and percussion skills. Her work in the theatre and music departments has allowed her to collaborate with other students, learning from their experiences while sharing her own.
Outside of campus, Gallagher still maintains strong connections with her hometown community by working with her former high school band, instructing percussion and helping the students develop their musical skills. During downtime on campus, she can be found somewhere outside exploring with her dog, Hamilton.
“Sarah has always been special to me,” shared friend and alumni Layla Freeman. “This past school year, we grew a lot closer to one another. She has always been a person for me to lean on. One of the most important memories is during my senior recital when we did a duet of “S.O.S.” from Mamma Mia. She practiced it with me in the car and during lessons, and for that, I will be forever grateful.”
Looking toward the future, as she completes her senior year, Gallagher hopes to continue her journey by obtaining a dual master’s degree in music education and music performance. She plans to combine her performance experience with teaching, aiming to inspire young musicians as a public-school teacher while continuing to perform.
