Mental Health Matters.
SACC and Morgans Message collaborated and held a world mental heath day in the atrium on Sept. 24.
This event allowed students to take time for themselves to make bracelets and reflect by writing on sticky notes to stick onto a cork board in the lobby for fellow students to read. The notes could contain anything from positives affirmations to things that bring happiness.
“I think it’s really important to build small breaks like this into our schedules,” said graduate student Hannah Huffman, president of Morgan’s Message.
Morgan’s Message is a club on many college campuses to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health in athletes. The goal is to have these conversations be normalized and to empower those fighting mentally.
“Not only as athletes but as busy college students, sometimes we get too wrapped up in everything going on so it’s nice to engage in small mental health activities to give ourselves a chance to reset” Huffman added.
Organizers say talking about mental health is important, and that no one should suffer in silence and have it be pushed aside. According to mentalhealth.uk Here are some steps to take to make it a little easier:
- Talk to someone you trust, this can be friends, family, or a therapist.
- Think about the setting where you are taking, try to find a quiet space or somewhere where the person is comfortable.
- Prepare for reaction, this could break down walls someone has had built up, prepare to comfort them or give them time to process their own emotions. Don’t push this step.
- Check in on them as often as possible, create the safe space for them.
Organizers say that together, people can help break the stigma.
