The Student Engagement Team hosted their monthly Wellness Wednesday event in Franklin Hall last Wednesday.
The event provides students with an opportunity to chat with both on and off-campus wellness providers, while also discovering new ways to improve their overall well-being.
Wednesday’s event held five different stations including the Student Engagement Team, Tri-Area Community Health, the Franklin County Family Resource Center, Virginia Prevention Works, and Lacey Matthews’ health and wellness table.
The Student Engagement Team, who helped coordinate the event, held the first table and encouraged students to go through all of the stations, offering up freebies like fidget spinners, snacks, condoms, and hydration powders. They also advertised their upcoming events including a lip sync battle, hotdog eating contest, and Spring Fling.

The first table was followed by Tri-Area Community Health, Ferrum’s on-campus medical clinic, where students could learn information on the resources the clinic provides. The table provided free stress toys, lotions, and mints for students to grab as they walked by.
The Area Coordinator for Lakeside Health & Wellness, Lacey Matthews, provided encouraging worksheets for students who take part in prayer and offered up information about her personal podcast at her table.
“I’m here at Wellness Wednesday today just to spread positivity and encourage growth,” she said. “I also have a podcast for young women in their twenties where I share lessons that I learned that people didn’t necessarily teach me, but I wish I would’ve known.”

After Matthews’ table, the Virginia Prevention Works Organization invited students to complete the Virginia Young Adult Survey to win a $10 Amazon gift card. The survey allowed students to be open with their experiences and allows the state of Virginia to assess the health needs of young adults aged 18-25. After completion of the survey, partakers were encouraged to grab some trail mix provided by the station.
“I like that I can come here, learn things, and also get a bunch of free stuff,” said first-year Schously Rodriguez.
The last station was held by the Franklin County Family Resource Center that provides assistance in domestic violence situations. The table provided students with information on the available resources the organization has, and held free items like cups, chapsticks, bracelets, and pins.
“It’s good to know I have all of these resources available if I did ever need them,” stated first-year Titus Adler. “I always attend Wellness Wednesday and always learn a lot while I’m here.”
The event saw a great number of students as they passed by throughout the community hour.
This Wellness Wednesday marks the last one of the semester, but the team still has a few wellness events planned for the last week of classes.
