Panthers Split Volleyball Opening

Taylor Joyner, sophomore, had a combined 21 kills over the first two matches.

The Panthers split a pair of non-conference volleyball matches this past Saturday at Mary Baldwin University. The Panthers fell 3-0 to NCAA Division II opponent Virginia Union University and then beat host Mary Baldwin 3-1, both at MBU Gymnasium.

For the Panthers, Ferrum got 11 kills from Taylor Joyner and seven from Alex Christoff. Christoff added four service aces, Shelby Waltrip had 13 assists, and Saryn Pennell and Joyner had eight digs each.

Joyner added 10 kills against the Fighting Squirrels, while Waltrip and M’Kayla McBride had nine each. Waltrip dished out 22 assists and Maddie Lowther  had 13 assists. Waltrip’s stat line included 11 digs and four service aces.

Next up, Coach Shelbylynn Adair‘s team will play its home opener Tues., Sept. 6, against Greensboro College. The non-conference match is set for 6:30 p.m. at Swartz Gym.
