Women’s Basketball Falls to Maryville 57-45

The Panther Women’s Basketball Team lost to Maryville College 57-45 this past Sunday in a non-conference game. In the first quarter, Maryville took an early 9-1 lead before Demisha Canada converted a three point play at the free throw line. Aisha Martin, senior, hit a three pointer to make it 10-6. The Scots took a 13-6 lead after one quarter of play.

Emma Huskey and Courtney Carruthers hit shots to extend the lead by 9 early on in the second quarter for Maryville. The Scots saw their lead grow as high as 15,before the Panthers cut it to 31-19 at halftime.

In the third quarter Trina Lewis, freshman, scored back to back baskets, and Kayla Cabiness, junior, converted to pull within seven points, 38-31. But in the fourth quarter, Maryville used a 9-0 run in the first seven minutes, which was enough to halt a comeback by the Panthers.

For the Panthers, Cabiness scored 14 points, grabbed three rebounds, and notched two assists. Martin tallied 14 points, snatched seven rebounds, and dropped two assists. Trina Lewis tossed in seven points and pulled in two rebounds.

Head Coach Bryan Harvey‘s team will be back in action Wed., Nov. 16, as they will take on Averett University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Swartz Gymnasium.
