Softball split a non-conference doubleheader last night at home with Southern Virginia University at Vickie Van Kleeck Softball Complex.

In the first game and the third inning, Jaci Shumway’s fly to right field gave Southern Virginia the only run of the game. Arianna Prymake threw a complete seven-inning, five-hitter for the win. Panther Lyndsey Sears, senior, pitched all seven innings and took the loss.

The second game turned around for the Panthers with two runs in the first inning by Macie Bell, freshman, and Erin Nelson, senior, with RBI singles to right field. The Panthers added another four runs in the second inning, as well as RBI singles from Brianna Weaver, junior; and Macey Moore, sophomore; a sac fly by Sears; and an RBI fielder’s choice from Bell to make it a 6-0 game.

Southern Virginia scored five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, taking an 8-6 lead. The Panthers followed with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with two runs each on Weaver and Moore’s RBI singles and Sears’ RBI double. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Panthers added a run on a fielding error.

Weaver went 3-5 with two runs and three RBIs, then Sears went 2-4 with a double, three RBIs and 1 run. Wynema Thomas, freshman, finished with the win in the circle after throwing a third of an inning. Sears came on to pitch in the last two innings, striking out four batters.

The Panthers will be back on the field Sat., March 25, at home against Bridgewater College. The new softball complex will be dedicated and opened that day.
