It only took 1.5 hours for the freshman joined by facility, staff, and RA’s to compose 50,000 meals during a 2023 Harvest Pack.

For Makila Veny, a Connection Leader and college junior, this experience was all about making sure the freshmen enjoyed themselves and used this as a learning opportunity.

“I think it was a learning experience for the majority of them. It showed them it is easy and can be a lot of fun giving back to their local community–especially when we do it together,” Veny said.

Interim President Mirta Martin had the same image in mind, using this experience to incorporate the morals of the school into the minds of the incoming freshmen.

“Our motto is ‘Not Self, But Others’. It is essential for our new students to begin their journey at Ferrum College living out this motto,” Martin said.

Martin continued explaining her excitement over the successful number of meals prepared.

‘This is the second time this year we have partnered with Harvest Pack for this valuable, team-building and service activity, and I am proud of our students for doubling the number of meals packed,” she said.

Heavenly Manna of Rocky Mount, VA distributed the packaged meals to five of the local food bank organizations.
