As the final two weeks of the spring season draw close, Panthers Tennis took a swing in a winning direction, taking a first overall match win on Sun. April 7.

The weekend did not start out on such a great footing, as both the men’s and women’s teams took a loss the prior Sat. April 6 in North Carolina against William Peace.

The Lady Panthers but fell short in a loss for the team with a final score of 0-9. Nonetheless, the team members offered only smiled and bright eyes, as they even posted an online reel titled a day in the life as a Panthers tennis player.

The men’s team battled hard, too, and almost defeated their opponents, finishing with a 4-5 total.

Two doubles matches took a win, including Gabriel Alavarez, sophomore, and Jairo Herbas, freshman, at 8-6, and Will Davis, junior, and Austin Brigman, freshman, by forfeit.

Senior night struck at the home courts the following day against Mary Baldwin on Sun. April 7, where not only long-lasting final memories were shared between the team, coaches, and fans, but seniors Zach Everson and Ryon Johnson presented the coach with pun-ny t-shirts. They also celebrated a Panther win as well.

The women’s team took a first win of the season, with great thanks to a tiebreaker by Hannah Huffman, junior. Morgan Hundly and Mary Mason won a doubles match, as well as Emily Walker, junior, and Olivia Turner, junior, by forfeit. Huffman, Walker, and Turner all took first in their singles matches as well.

The men notched a win Sunday as well, with each doubles team conquering their opponents with a five-win streak across the six singles matches.

It was the intention of the team to compete against Bridgewater College once more on Tues. April 9, but the game was postponed for a second time due to inclimate weather.

Tennis will continue its season at Virginia Wesleyan on April 13, Bridgwater on April 19, and Randolph-Macon on April 21.
