Panthers Split ODAC Matchups, Look Ahead to Invitational

Panther wrestlers had an up and down weekend, falling to Roanoke 38-14 before bouncing back with a 27-20 victory over Shenandoah.

 The split leaves Ferrum with a record of  9-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Against Roanoke, the Panthers fell into a 15-0 hole to start it off as the Maroons opened with three straight technical falls.

Ferrum got on the board when first-year Cameron Curva (149 lbs) earned a 15-4 major decision over Dustin Smith.

Momentum shifted back as Roanoke secured three consecutive pins at 157, 165, and 174 lbs.

The Maroons added another technical fall at 184 lbs to extend their lead to 38-4.

Ferrum closed out on a positive note as senior Sam Slate (197 lbs) won by disqualification after his opponent received a fifth stalling call.

Senior Rayshawn Dixon won with a 9-1 major decision over Brady Elswick making the final score 38-14.

Looking to redeem themselves, Ferrum battled against Shenandoah. 

The Panthers jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after a forfeit win by Senior Zach Beckner (125 lbs) and a 16-3 major decision by senior Trent Proctor (133 lbs).

First-year Cameron Curva (149 lbs) and junior Joseph Olalde (157 lbs) earned back-to-back major decisions.

Shenandoah fought back, earning a fall at 165 lbs and a tech fall at 174 lbs to cut the Panther lead to 17-14.

Sophomore Joseph Toner (184 lbs) pinned his opponent in 5:30 to extend Ferrum’s lead to 23-14.

Shenandoah responded back with a pin at 197 lbs, but senior Rayshawn Dixon delivered in the clutch, securing a 9-0 major decision to seal the 27-20 win for the Panthers.

Coach Logan Meister and the Panthers will now focus on their next match at the Peat Wilson Invitational in Illinois Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
