An early 2000s playlist donned the Ferrum College Drag Pageant recenlty in the Rex Theatre as it sported its largest and most supportive audience since its revival two years ago.

Nervous and anxious energy buzzed from the diverse crowd just before the opening statements were made.

Although the pageant has held many different names throughout the years, including the Mrs. and Mr. Ferrum Pageant, the supportive and celebratory atmosphere has remained.

“It’s important that we continue to support this long-standing art and tradition to keep inclusivity and diversity alive,” explained Ahna Tyree, President of the Genders and Sexualities Alliance Club.

Tyree’s sentiment echoed throughout the night, as the pageant fostered a sense of community and inclusion that brought together students, faculty, and community members alike.

The panel of judges included Tyree, sophomore; Troy Smith, senior; and Ray (Rachel) Blankenship-Tucker, Previous Title Holder. Their feedback was critical in deciding the winners based on three distinct categories, which included makeup, outfit, and lip-syncing performances.

The first contestant welcomed on stage was Kieran Groce (Keres) with a dramatic performance titled “Thunder Bring Her”.

“I was nervous to have to go first, but it felt good once I was up there,” laughed Groce.

Each contestant brought fresh and distinct energy to the stage with their performances, despite their rising anxieties and nerves or having very little time to prepare.

“I only just found out I’d be performing this morning, but I’m glad I did,” beamed senior Emily “Rocco” Bass (Detective Suspect).

After an intense and fierce competition, the results were announced. Third place went to Groce. The Best Newbie Award, along with second place, was given to Bass, and in first place, taking home the crown, was the ever-entertaining Ethan Cole (Facetious).

This year’s pageant success has set a high bar, and with such an enthusiastic response, the GSA club hopes to inspire even more performers and audience members to get involved in next year’s growing event.
