Students celebrated the diversity of the college’s international community during the Cultural Fair hosted by the Offices of International Programs and Student Life and Engagement on April 7.
International students brought a glimpse into their own cultures through displays that highlighted each country’s background, customs, food, currency, geography, and interesting tidbits.
“I’m doing this because it’s part of my program here,” explained Sabrina Brutomeso, Fulbright scholar. “I teach Spanish, and I also try to promote my culture. Basically, I wanted to come here and show as much as I can about Argentina. I feel that I have really learned to love being here. I have benefited from learning about different places and cultures, and this has really helped me both as a person and professionally as well.”
Along with perusing the bright posters with pictures and flair, guests of the Cultural Fair were able to sample cookies and other traditional treats from around the world, adding a literal taste of international flavor to the celebration.
I’ve been a student here for quite a while now,” said Gabriel Alvarez, junior. “I always find it interesting to meet people that maybe do not know a lot about other countries or that want to know more about other countries and how they live in South America specifically. I decided it was worth sharing with anyone that may want to learn more about Venezuela.”
Led by History Professor Brian Suttell in its second year of rebirth, the Cultural Fair has gained in popularity with both presenters and attendees.
“I came here this semester, and with meeting a lot of new people I’ve learned that generally, people don’t know too much about Canada. I wanted to show more people about our culture”, expressed Jackson Hutchison, sophomore.
The Cultural Fair has played a major role in building cross-cultural understanding on campus while fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. It also serves as a reminder to everyone that learning goes far beyond the classroom.
