Mackenzie Humphreys scored two goals in her freshman debut to lift the Panther field hockey team over Southern Virginia University.

The Panther Field Hockey team scored twice in the final 12 minutes of play to post a 2-1 comeback win over visiting Southern Virginia University Thursday at W.B. Adams Stadium. The non-conference game marked the season opener for both schools.

Following a scoreless first half, the Knights opened scoring when Karenna Olson took a pass from Ellie Marble and beat Ferrum goalkeeper Anna Corsey at the 37:50 mark. The Panthers put pressure on Southern Virginia over the next 10 minutes, with Mackenzie Humphreys poking a shot past SVU goalkeeper Kiera White for an unassisted goal at the 48:39 mark to tie the game.

Humphreys then notched the game-winner at 49:57 off a pass across the middle from Brianna Coerper. The win gave Ferrum’s Chardonnay Hope her first career victory in her coaching debut.

“I am so proud of this team for handling adversity and coming from behind to pull out the win. I want to congratulate Mackenzie on her first collegiate goals this evening, and Brianna for her first collegiate assist!” Hope said.

The Panthers will host Allegheny College Sun., Sept. 4, at 12:00 p.m. in another non-conference matchup.
