The Panther’s baseball team brought home a 9-3 non-conference win yesterday on the road against William Peace University in the USA Baseball National Training Center. Ferrum’s season record now stands at 5-12.

In the top of the first inning, the Panthers scored three runs with a sacrifice fly from Ozzie Torres, senior; an RBI single to left field from Clayton Michael, junior; and an RBI single from Nick Funk, freshman; to right field.

Then, in the second, a two-run homer over the left field fence from Russel Golembe, freshman, plus a ground-out to shortstop from Funk drove another run in, making it a 6-0 game after three frames.

In the sixth inning, Enrique Diaz, junior, scored from third, and Michael doubled to right field, driving in another run and making the lead 8-0. A pair of RBI singles led to three runs for the Pacers, putting the score at 8-3. Shortly thereafter, Funk hit the right field and helped the final run across the plate for the Panthers.

The Panthers pitched by committee, nine different pitchers each with one inning. Gavin Stone, freshman, grabbed his first career win after permitting no hits, walks, or runs in the first inning.

The team will be swinging again in a doubleheader tomorrow, March 25, at Easter Mennonite University in Harrisonburg VA.
