Last Friday, the Track and Field team competed at the Wildcat Invitational, with one athlete marking a nationally ranked performance. The following day, six seniors were celebrated among their teammates and families.
The 100-meter was led by Sophomore Jahmal Jones, who earned a national ranking with a time of 10.45. This not only placed him 1st in the meet but also 22nd in Division II this season.
Several other Ferrum athletes also competed in the 100-meter race., with first-year Justice English finishing 4th, first-year Tristan Peterson taking 5th, and first-year Japhon English placing 16th.
Justice English also recorded a 7th place finish in the 400-meter race with a time of 52.03.
First-year Vladimir Joacin Jr. led the discus with a 4th place finish at a distance of 37.53-meters.
Junior Kyle Holcomb added another top-ten finish, placing 7th in the discus throw with a distance of 35.02-meters.
Junior Jalen Hagwood also threw for the team, landing a 9th place mark of 12.17-meters in shot-put, with Junior Myles Chambers and senior Jaylon Hillman recording personal-bests in the throw as well.
Two women competed in this meet, with one placing 2nd in her event.
First-year Shakiya Buie finished 2nd in the 100-meter and 4th in the 200-meter, landing her two Top-10 rankings.
First-year Shaniyah Menefee competed in 3 throwing events, marking new distances in discus, hammer, and shot-put, and leading the Ferrum throwers.
The following day, six track and field seniors were celebrated prior to the women’s softball game. Peter Barnett, Hillman, Deontae Lawson, Josh Mills, Logan McClung, and Kayden Ryder were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the team.
The team will be back in action at the Conference Carolinas Championship today through April 25, giving these seniors one last opportunity to compete as Ferrum College athletes.
