Panther Baseball went 4-3 over the last two weeks, thanks to performances from first-year Eli Eliott and senior Kyle Markowitz.
Ferrum began the week facing Southern Virginia University at home. The score was tied at six by the conclusion of the fifth inning.
At the top of the sixth, SVU broke off and scored eleven straight runs to put out a 17-6 lead, and cruise to an 18-8 victory.
Next up on the schedule was a double header against ODAC competition on senior night, facing Shenandoah University.
The first game began slowly, with the Hornets picking up one run in the first, and both teams continuing to remain scoreless through five innings.
The Panthers began to find a groove in the sixth, scoring two runs, one thanks to Markowitz. Ferrum kept the momentum going in the seventh and eighth innings, picking up a run in each while not giving up any.
Despite a ninth inning solo home run from the Hornets, the Panthers pulled away with the win.
The second game of the night seemed to be much of the same from the first game, with the two teams only scoring four runs over five innings, and a score of 3-1 in favor of Shenandoah. The very next inning, the Panthers exploded for 8 runs.
First it was junior Gregory Melo coming home thanks to a sophomore Tyler Mason single. This was followed by another single to bring in a runner, a pair of walks resulting in scores, and three consecutive runs off of singles. Ferrum found themselves up 9-3 after six.
Shenandoah would score two in the seventh, and Ferrum answered back with one in the seventh and eighth.
Though Shenandoah went on to score 4 runs within the last 3 innings, the Panthers pulled away with an 11-9 victory.
Once again on their home dirt, Ferrum faced off against more ODAC competition last Tuesday against Roanoke College. Roanoke came out to an early lead, building a 3-0 cushion at the top of the first inning.
At the bottom of the second, the Panthers began building momentum, scoring four runs, two of which came from Mason’s 2 RBI double.
The Maroons answered back with a home run in the third inning, but Ferrum would score four straight to put them up 9-4.
Although Roanoke did manage to score another run in the fifth, the game would remain scoreless for the next 4 innings, and the Panthers kept their win streak alive at 3.
In the first game of a three-game series against Covenant last weekend, senior Carlos Castillo tied the school record of home runs in a game with 3. This feat was last achieved in the 1998 season. The Panthers went on to drop the game 10-8.
The next morning, set to face Covenant in a double header, Ferrum would pick up their only win in the series. The victory was secured thanks to a Castillo and Markowitz pair of doubles.
Ferrum dropped the last game of the series, putting their current season record at 18-19, with a chance to get back into positive standing today against Averett at 6:00 at home.
