This coming Tuesday, at 11:30 a.m. in Vaughn Chapel, the Human Resource Office will hosting the Veterans Day Program.
The ceremony will recognize veterans and active-duty service members within the college community. The National Anthem will be led by the Panther Singers, under the direction of Music and Theatre Program Coordinator Emily Blankenship-Tucker, with accompaniment by Music Professor Ashley Cundiff.
Professor Emeritus Melvin Macklin will be this year’s keynote speaker.
“I got a call from Human Resources and was extended an invitation to be the keynote speaker, and I am very honored,” Macklin said. “I’ve never done a Veterans Day speech before, but I am very flattered that they asked me.”
Macklin served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1969 as a sergeant and radio communications specialist.
Since serving, Macklin has taught for 52 years. He taught more 30 years in Illinois and Texas. He has taught in elementary schools, head-start programs, and high schools, as well as adult education like ESL at every level. Macklin has been with Ferrum College for 17 years and teaches African American literature and composition.
For his keynote speech, Macklin shared the theme.
“I’m going to use a theme about the presence of a veteran is crucial in today’s often uncertain and unpredictable world,” he said.
He also shared what Veterans Day means to him.
“It’s a time for America to thank those who have gone into military service and made the ultimate sacrifice, paying with their lives, in the defense of our way of life; our way of freedom,” he said.
This program provides an opportunity to acknowledge individuals who have served in the armed forces.
The college welcomes all members of the campus and local community to attend and take part in the event.
