First-years Sofia Ponce and Breyana Kimmons led the Panthers to their first Division II win last Saturday, Nov. 15 in Bluffton, SC against Georgia Southwestern. The game was the second in a two-day tournament after losing the first to the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.
The tournament was part of the Conference Carolinas v. Peach Belt Conference Challenge.
On Nov. 14, against USC Beaufort, the women’s team led the way in the first half.
Senior Tauryn Blankenship was the highest scoring Panther in the game with 16 points, followed by first-year Dezariyah Clark with 14 and senior Allyson Cassell with 15.
Despite the team’s best efforts, they lost in the second half of the game, finalizing the score of 75-66 for Ferrum’s first Division II game.
However, Ferrum returned for a win on Sat., Nov. 15.
Georgia Southwestern took the first quarter of the match, leaving fans to question the fate of Ferrum in the conference. However, a 20-point second quarter led the Panthers to the first win of the season, with the score of 60-57.
Ponce scored 21 points throughout the game, and Kimmins scored 16.
The women’s basketball team now has a 1-1 win-loss record.
