Ferrum College officials announced yesterday that the campus will transition to remote operations beginning Mon., Jan. 26, in anticipation of a significant winter weather system expected to hammer the region.

Students who are able to travel safely were encouraged to return home after their final class of the week, according to a campus-wide message sent by President Mirta Martin. Students needing to leave earlier were advised to coordinate with faculty to ensure coursework is completed.

Classes will be held remotely at least through Wed., Jan. 28, using asynchronous instruction, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet. College operations will also shift to remote work during that period, though the institution will remain open.

Students planning to leave campus are asked to notify their resident assistants prior to departure. Those remaining on campus must also inform residence life staff. College officials said students who stay will be supported throughout the weather event.

“The college is fully prepared to support you during this weather event,” Martin said in the announcement, adding that campus safety, residence life, facilities, dining services, and the Office of the President will remain operational.

Dining services will operate on weekend hours each day, offering meals from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

All athletic contests scheduled for this weekend and next week have been postponed until at least Wednesday, Jan. 28, weather permitting. Student-athletes were advised to check with their coaches for updated information.

Braxton Nichols, a first-year student, said that baseball is letting its players choose to stay or go home with no practice next week.

Provost Rich Grant followed up with faculty guidance, emphasizing flexibility for students who may leave early or experience limited internet access due to weather-related disruptions. Faculty were encouraged to provide asynchronous instruction when possible.

Officials warned that if power outages occur, only limited campus spaces will remain heated, lighted, and connected to the internet.

Weather-related updates will be shared through the Ferrum College website, social media platforms, and RAVE alerts. College leaders said the measures are intended to prioritize safety during what they described as a potentially disruptive storm.
