Track Team Hits New PRs at Liberty Open

Eight track and field competitors reached new PRs on Jan. 23 at the Liberty Open, held at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

Sophomore Jahmal Jones took the lead in the men’s 60 meter race, hitting a personal record time of 6.75. This time puts him at #12 amid NCAA Division II track and field competitors. Jones also performed well in the 200 meter mens race, placing fifth with a time of 21.53.

First-year Zenallah Hatcher-Simmons reached 10th place in the women’s shot-put, throwing a distance of 12.39 meters. For Simmons, this is a season-best and the distance reaches 93rd place in all of Division II.

The freshmen showed out in setting many personal records including:

  • First-year Tristan Peterson hitting a PR of 23.10 in the men’s 200 meter.
  • First-year Josiah Gallegos reaching a PR at 54.09 in the men’s 400 meter.
  • First-year Bryce Penn trailing right behind at 55.92 marking a PR in the men’s 400 meter.
  • First-year Seth Truett and Ethan Fitzgerald both reached new personal records in the men’s 800 meter race with times of 1:59.97 (Truett) and 2:05.15 (Fitzgerald)
  • First-year Carlos Menendez now holds a PR of 4:46.88 in the men’s mile.

First-year Camille Vaughn also struck a season-best in the women’s 200 meter race with a time of  26.34.

The track and field team will return to a meet on Feb. 6-7, to compete at the Doc Hale Invite.
