While campus remained remote due to the inclement weather, women’s basketball took no time off, competing against Lees McRae College on Jan. 28 and Barton College on Jan. 30, taking two Conference Carolinas losses.
However, the Panthers did not go down without a fight.
Against Lees McRae, first-year Aleksandra Kubiak brought Ferrum an early lead, kicking off the game with a three-pointer. Kubiak was the top scorer of the game, shooting a total of 17 points throughout the game.
With Kubiak’s scores, senior Allyson Cassell‘s free-throw shots, and first-year Breeyana Kimmon’s layup in the first quarter, the Panthers were set for an easy lead until Lees McRae’s Gracie Bean shot a three-pointer, allowing the Bobcats a 19-14 lead.
Sophomore Maslyn Mosbacher continued their efforts, starting the second quarter with a layup. The game continued with alternating baskets from each side, closing in with a score of 60-59 in Ferrum’s favor that led into over-time. Lees McRae got ahead with two free-throws, taking their win back home to NC with the scoreboard reading a final 63-68.
Cassell was the second top-scorer of the night with a total of 12 points, followed by Mosbacher with 10, and Kimmons with 9.
The following Saturday in Wilson, NC, the Panthers took on Wilson’s Bulldogs.
Ferrum had a slow start, as Barton jumped out to a 33-15 lead in the first half.
After half-time, the Panthers returned to the court, ready to make a comeback with a 46.2 shot average in the third quarter, and a 66.7 in the final 10 minutes.
First-year Dezariyah Clark led the way for Ferrum, scoring 11 points, followed by Mosbacher with 7 and Kubiak with 8. It was not enough to defeat Barton, led by Layne Sleight, who scored 19 points for the team and brought the score to 65-48.
Ferrum is back in action tonight at King University.
