The Ferrum College track and field team attended a two-day competition at the VMI Winter Relays this past weekend on Feb. 6-7.
On Day One the Panthers began strong with both personal and season’s bests, along with a podium finish from a first-year.
Zenallah Hatcher-Simmons, a first-year, secured a second place finish in the women’s shot put. She threw a 13.21 m and scored the team eight points. This throw not only put her in second at the VMI competition, but also ranked her as second best in Conference Carolinas.
Sophomore Jahmal Jones qualified for the 60-meter men’s finals after timing at 6.79 in the prelim race.
Both Hatcher-Simmons and Jones were named CC’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week after their performances.
Other achievements from day one include:
- First-year Tristan Peterson hit a personal best of 7.08 in the mens 60-meter.
- Senior Deonate Lawson recorded a season best of 7.16 in the 60-meter and marked a distance of 6.20 in the long jump.
- First-year Vladmir Joacin Jr. led the men’s shot put with a throw of 12.77 meters.
- First-year Zyreonia Patterson recorded a personal best of 8.27 in the 60-meter and a season best jump of 5.07 meters in the long jump
- First-year Dezyre Christian hit her personal best of 8.39 in the 60-meter and a season best of 4.74 inches the long jump
The Panthers closed out the event with with several more achievements.
- Junior Peter Barnett set a season best in the mens 800-meter.
- Senior Josh Mills also recorded a season best in the mens 800-meter race.
- Junior Nadiyah Absussalaam placed seventh in the women’s shot put with a distance of 9.27 meters.
- First-year Miyah Young set a season best in the women’s 800 meter.
- First-years Josiah Gallegos, Sarah Hudgins, and Carlos Menendez all set new personal records in their foot races.
Both teams will be back in action Feb., 14 for the VMI Winter Classic.
