Panther wrestlers fell short at UNC Pembroke on Feb. 6 with a lone winner.
The matches began with sophomore Andres Cortes (157) dropped a 9-4 decision to UNC Tyler Nelson. The Braves dominated their way to a tech fall at 165 pounds then earned a forfeit at 174 to take a 14-0 lead. Pembroke then picked up four consecutive tech falls at 184, 197, 185, and 125 to extend their lead 34-0.
Sophomore Josiah Canales Maldonado (133) broke up the Braves’ winning streak with a pin against Samuel Hutchinson from UNC at the 5:35 mark. Canales Maldonado then tied the match 9-9 before making the team score 34-6. UNC accepted a forfeit at 141, then won a decision at 149 for the final score.
Next up for the Panthers is a home match Feb. 13 at 6p.m in Swartz Gym against Coker. It will also be senior night.
