Track and Field Teams Finish Indoor Season

This past weekend, both the men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The event ended in two Ferrum College podium finishes.

Sophomore Jahmal Jones led by seizing his first ever Conference Carolinas individual championship in the 60-meter sprint. First-year Zenallah Hatcher Simmons earned a third place finish in the shot-put, throwing 12.64-meters.

The Ferrum men finished 9th with 23 points.

Contributing to this score was first-year Damani Veney-Epps who finished 6th in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:57.87. First-year Carlos Menendez also contributed by timing a 4:38.37 in the men’s mile. Senior Deontae Lawson recorded a 6.18-meter long jump and first-year Vladmir Joacin Jr. threw 12.56-meters in the men’s shot-put.

The Ferrum women finished 10th with 17.5 points.

Junior Nadiyah Abdussalaam earned points in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot-put, and triple jump. First-year Camille Vaughn scored in both the 60-meter and 200-meter with times of 7.94 and and 26.61, respectively. First-year Zyreonia Patterson placed 6th in the long jump with a distance of 5.43-meters.

The 4×400-meter men’s relay team of Jones, Lawson, first-year Ethan Fitzgerald, and junior Peter Barnett finished 8th with a time of 3:23.91. The women’s relay team composed of Vaughn, first-year Sarah Hudgins, first-year Madyson Swaine, and first-year Dezyre Christian finished 9th with a time of 4:13.95.

The men’s 4000-meter distance medley relay team placed 4th with a time of 10:31.55. The team included Veney-Epps, first-year Josiah Gallegos, Barnett, and first-year Seth Truett.

This event concluded the indoor track and field season. The teams will return March 13-14th at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge for their first outdoor meet.
