This past Saturday both the men’s and women’s track teams competed at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge held at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

This event was marked by personal bests, podium finishes, and season records from the Panthers.

Sophomore Jahmal Jones paved the way in sprints by placing second in the men’s 100-meter race and first in the men’s 200-meter race.

Jones improved his 100-meter time by seven seconds going from a 10.54 in the prelims to a 10.47 in the race.

Senior Deontae Lawson hit a personal best in the 100-meter with a time of 11.00, just milliseconds away from Jones. He also contributed in the men’s 200-meter with a time of 22.58.

First-year Camille Vaughn posted personal bests in the sprints as well. In both the 100-meter, and 200-meter races she hit personal records with times of 12.61 and 25.96.

In the middle distance events, a podium finish run was seen by first-year Damani Veney-Epps, who placed second in the open 1500-meter with a time of 4:21.65. This time was closely followed by first-year Carlos Menendez who finished at 4:22.41.

Junior Peter Barnett trailed right behind and reached a PR in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:41.57.

For field events, first-year Dezyre Christian reached a personal best in the triple jump, achieving a distance of 10.30-meters and attaining a third-place podium finish.

First-year Vladimir Joarcin Jr. also excelled in this area with a 13.29-meter shot-put throw, and a 33.63-meter discus throw.

Folks from each section of races and events contributed in pulling points for the Ferrum Track and Field team.

The Panthers will be back in action March 27-28 at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational, hosted by the University of Lynchburg.
