VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) has installed an ADA accessible ramp on the corner of Ferrum Mountain Road and Route 40 at Ferrum College.

The American Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life.

“They were in charge of the design, construction and install,” said Barbara Hatcher, Vice President of Business and Finance. “We were trying to make sure that it didn’t happen at the start of school.”

The project had a cost an estimate of $85,000, but the final numbers are not in yet.

“The project was one that had been planned. There had been some work done on Ferrum Mountain Road a couple years ago, and when that kind of work is done, all intersections are brought up to ADA compliance,” said Jason Bond, VDOT Spokesperson.
