Ferrum College’s Men’s Basketball team stayed hot in Conference Carolinas play with an 81-76 road victory over Barton College Friday night at Wilson Gymnasium.
Ferrum (12-7 overall, 10-3 Conference Carolinas) trailed for much of the first half but rallied behind a huge performance from senior Gerren Jones, who scored 33 points to lead all scorers.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle with nine lead changes. Barton (8-13, 6-7 CC) took control late in the opening half when Trey Fields hit a three-pointer to push the Bulldogs ahead 45-36 with under two minutes left. Ferrum cut the margin before halftime, with Jones converting a pair of layups to make it 45-40 at the break.
Barton opened the second half strong, going on a 13-5 run that gave them a double-digit lead early in the period. But Ferrum refused to fold. Jones sparked a Panther run with back-to-back three-pointers, and Rodrigo Farias hit free throws to pull Ferrum to within three points. Jones hit another 3-pointer around the 10:40 mark to tie the game at 59-59.
Ferrum took its first lead of the second half when Jones hit jumpers, and teammates Abdulh Diaby and Farias added baskets to make it 68-63 with about seven minutes left. From there, the Panthers held off Barton in the closing minutes to secure the road win.
In addition to Jones’ big night, Farias scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Alfredo Abel-Rivera added 14 points for Ferrum. Barton was led by Fields with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Isaiah Davis scored 16 and Trevur Smalls added 10 in the loss.
The win gave Ferrum a season sweep of Barton after a tight home victory earlier in Conference Carolinas play.
Ferrum returns to the road tomorrow evening, to face King University in another conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Bristol, TN.
