The Panther Volleyball team continues to push past the midpoint in their season, picking up a win against Johnson and Wales and are set to compete in a conference matchup against King University at home tomorrow.
In the game against Shorter University, the game was a back-an-forth affair, through the first 15 points, with lead changes occurring 5 different times. This was spearheaded from kills by sophomores Renee Dove and Sarabeth Johnson, and first-year Emma Powell.
Ferrum attempted to build and sustain a lead through kills by first-year Danielle Worthy, junior Catherine Bennett, and Powell. The Hawks began to weather the storm, tying the game at 12, then again at 13, and 14 before regaining the lead.
Once again, the lead would change hands after a Johnson kill to put the Panthers up 16-15. This would quickly be retaken by the Hawks, pulled away with four unanswered points, to bring their lead to 19-15.
Though the Panthers attempted to rally, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome, and Shorter picked up the first set with a final score of 25-21.
The second set began with a kill from Worthy, but would be followed up by two kills and an ace from the Hawks to take the lead.
After a three point run of their own, the Panthers would regain the lead courtesy of Dove’s kill.
The lead would change 3 more times before Ferrum would explode for 5 straight points, with Bennett and Worthy adding kills to their count and first-year Daniella Castillo adding a service ace.
This however would not be enough to keep the Hawks down, as they continued to outscore the Panthers 15-6 through 21 plays to claim the second set.
Shorter would go on to pick up the third set and the game, with game totals ending in a 9-kill performance from Bennett, 12 assists from senior Kalee Bunn, and yet another 10-assist game for sophomore Harleigh Propst, who now sits at 18 double digit assist games on the season.
After a few dropped games on the road, Ferrum faced Johnson & Wales University for the second time this season, picking up another win against the Cougars 3-0.
Notable performances from this game included an 8-kill game from Bennett, 7 for Powell, and the sophomore duo of Dove and Johnson combined for 12 kills. Bunn had a 12 assist game, and first year Castillo picked up 3 service aces.
The Panther Volleyball team will be back on the hardwood tomorrow at Swartz Gym at 6:30 p.m. against the King University Tornados.
